Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Mardi Gras is famous for its colorful parades, elaborate floats and unforgettable celebrations. But in 2021, when parades throughout Louisiana were canceled because of COVID-19, creative residents of New Orleans found another way to keep the spirit alive: they transformed their homes into Mardi Gras house floats!
In 2026, the house-float tradition celebrated its sixth consecutive year. What began as a creative response to canceled parades became another way for neighborhoods to celebrate Mardi Gras, while providing opportunities for local artists and decorators.
Bringing Mardi Gras Home
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. It's traditionally a time for celebration, music, food and colorful decorations.
The house-float tradition brought that festive atmosphere directly into neighborhoods. Homes became elaborate displays, with colorful decorations, imaginative themes and plenty of purple, green and gold.
Even after traditional parades returned, house floats continued to give residents another way to celebrate.
